THE LETTER FROM GRAND MASTER (4)

Dear disciple,

In any task, we always aim for a goal.  The meaningful goal is always recognized so that the performer would act with all his energy and his heart.  Likewise with the practice of martial arts.

Without a goal.  The traveler wanders aimlessly, the soldier fights without purpose, however there are some goals which are high and ideal, some are low and short term, just for a period of time.

The archer cannot shoot with his eyes closed.  He can often score at very close range, but he is not proud of that shot.

For the beginner, he should practice art close range, then later increase the distance in order to improve his skills in archery.

In thinking and planning how to achieve a goal, one would improve himself, gain more experience and acquire maturity in life.

The same idea would apply for a martial artist. The beginner would practice martial arts for self-defense, or he may be interested in martial artist.  These are also thoughts for a Vovinam beginner. Eventually the Vovinam student realizes the martial arts and the way of martial arts are vital elements, which can make him a better person with a meaningful life.

Practicing martial arts with this goal is very idealistic, yet realistic.  Working with your body and, at the same time, improving your soul are the best ways to be a person with virtue.

Thus you will live for others and will be loved by others.  In this way a Vovinam student has practiced martial arts with The Way.  Even though it is a very high ideal, anyone can achieve it if he has a specific goal for which to aim.

With the above idea in mind, the Vovinam student will have great health and a beautiful soul.  He will have self-confidence to offer his contribution in seeking happiness for his family and the community.
